Fear of What Exactly?

I had so much trouble taking the leap to get my coaching and consulting business started. I wanted everything to be just right. I wanted no public mistakes that would embarrass me. So, I studied and studied what to do. In truth, I just used every excuse I could find so I wouldn’t look foolish. It was really about selling my services, and I was scared I’d fail. As I read this by Colin Dowling, I knew what I had to do. He said selling is a lot like golf. You can make it so complicated as to be impossible, or you can walk up and hit the ball. His advice is to, “step up and hit the ball.” So I learned to post, connect, and work daily. I’ve found my work resonates with some people. My advice to you? If you want to change your life and start something new, hit the ball. No matter how bad your stroke is, you’ll be closer to the hole than you would have been if you did nothing.

A Fierce Kick in the Rear

I do not doubt that Beckie, the founder of Fierce Creative + Strategy, wants the best for me. Like a great coach, she grew tired of my stagnancy and lack of progress. So, she kindly and firmly said to me, “You want to succeed? Every day you have to work this. No one will do it for you.” She’s right. I had to realize that if I wanted to achieve my goals, I must go after them with determination and grit. No one was going to do it for me. Sometimes in life, the cheers are few and far between. If you want to build a better life or a great business, you have to work daily with your head down and skin thick. Effort + consistent time = success. Do the math every day.

A Timely Commit Lesson

Halley, one of the cofounders of Commit Strategy out of Brooklyn, had a friendly reminder. “You want to succeed, do it now. Stop waiting. We flourish because we do it now. Do the same. Don’t chase perfection, go after excellence.” She’s so right. I knew what I needed to do, but, “I’ll do it tomorrow” was my old mantra. Not sure if it was fear, laziness, or just complacency. But it wasn’t productive. So, I learned that if success is critical, then put some urgency into it. If your goal is something more than you have now, do what you need to get there promptly. Every minute you wait, delays your success by a minute. Add these minutes together, and you get hours, days, months, and years of delay. What’s a good time to act, you ask, the answer is now.

My Lesson

I’m not where I want to be in life. Does that resonate with you? I’ve lost a great deal, been humiliated, started over, and now have sound footing. But that’s not where I want to be. I’ve learned lessons that keep me going. Life can take away a lot, but it can’t take away the love your real friends and family have. Only you can drive them away. Life can’t take away your dreams, and only you can give up on them. Life can’t take away your bright future. Only you can by quitting. Do you want to succeed? Love more, dream bigger, and keep going!

The Final Lesson

Do you want to get to the top? Follow Zig Ziglar’s wisdom. “You can get everything you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.” Everyone I’ve quoted in this article makes a living helping others get what they want. Everyone is successful. The correlation is pretty clear. The path to real success is not by stepping on people to get higher, but by being lifted each time you help them soar.
